"We'll get you on page 1 of Google" You must have heard or seen this phrase over and over again. The fact is that almost anyone can get your website listed on page 1 of Google for certain keywords. What most people don't realise is that being on page 1 of any search engine for a search phrase that is only typed in by half a dozen people around the world is actually worth zip. For example, one of my own websites www.go-games.com (Grey Olltwit Games) used to be on Page 1 of Google, Bing et al for the keyword 'go games'. According to Google's statistics, the phrase 'go games' was searched about 6 million times a month. Did I see a massive increase in traffic. Short answer, no, absolutely nothing. So why? Well Google's statistics are there to get you to buy Google Adwords advertising so their results are heavily biased. They are crafty because it is actually the keyword 'games' that is searched so much, not the combined keywords 'go games' which is searched for hardly at all.
"Google Page Rank" Google themselves keep trying to get web-masters to steer away from being obsessed by this ranking number between 0 and 10. It is supposed to show how important a website is to Google. For example Google's own websites rank around 9 or 10. However, the actual rank of your website has little or no effect in where your website appears in search results. As google themselves have pointed out it easily possible to have a website with a rank of 0 appearing as the top result when searching for a popular keyword or phrase.
"Alexa Traffic Stats" These are a complete and utter waste of space as they are compiled from web users who have the Alexa toolbar installed. Most Alexa Toolbar users are web-masters and only make up a minuscule percentage of web surfers. So Alexa multiplies these figures up so they look impressive. I have websites in the top 100,000 of websites world-wide but in reality they hardly get 20 visitors a week, whilst I have other websites with thousands of visitors a day ranking only in the top 1 million. The figures are also easily manipulated by Asian countries who have thousands of users just going round their customers websites with the Alexa toolbar installed giving them a false impressive traffic score.
"Social Networking" So called SEO Experts are currently bursting blood vessels trying to get companies to have a presence on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Why? Well it is another thing they can charge you for and waving about statistics like Facebook has 1 billion users does make people think these networks must be important. The reality is that a huge percentage of Facebook users are fake accounts and the rest are by Facebook's own admission not really interested in buying anything which is shoved in front of them on their private page. Twitter is the same in tweeting a vast quantity of completely useless information. Some is news and of importance but this is only a tiny percentage. I'm not saying you shouldn't have a page on Facebook or a Twitter account but it's importance has been hugely hyped by those looking for the next dollar.
